In Merchant of Venice, Shockley eventually lost the law suite. Furthermore, he had nothing left. They almost take all of his properties and didn't consider the consequences which influence his rest of life.
In the renaissance period, they didn't consider if the punishment is too heavy or not. This can cause a serious problem like over-punished or sometimes they punish for their own personal reasons, such as revenge or interest. This situation not only make the court become injustice but also cause more hatred.
